Working in a group setting for this project, we aimed to update the site with a user-friendly design while retaining the ethos of the NZ Drug Foundation and the importance of providing drug education.

NZ Drug Foundation

UX/UI Design (2022)

Project Outline

Our team was tasked to deliver a breakdown and redesign of the website for our chosen NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation), the NZ Drug Foundation (https://www.drugfoundation.org.nz/). By working closely with real users, our strategy embodied Human Centered Design at its core to deliver a complete redesign that reflects today’s needs for a modern, simple, and inclusive design.

Problem Statement

The problem most of our users found with the current website was the lack of a clear direction, information flow and outdated visuals. While the website itself was incredibly helpful resource in terms of educating the public, we saw an opportunity to improve its messaging and delivery. A modern update to it’s visuals and information flow would be a good way to make the user feel that the information they recieve is current, and reliable.

Design Approach

To better understand what needed to change, we conducted research, user interviews and looked into a variety of case studies to determine the issues with its current design. We then brainstormed various How Might We questions aimed at solving specific issues with the current layout, to finally determine a need for an updated and user-friendly design. Most importantly, we found value in retaining the ethos of NZ Drug Foundation, the importance of putting drug education first. that we enjoyed. Collecting images and visuals on our collaborative Miro board assisted in the later stages of prototyping, acting as a source of inspiration.

Key Insights
  •  Although our NGO focuses on educating the general public about drug facts, people generally thought the website was solely for helping drug addicts rather than for educating the general public.

  • The call to action is unclear; therefore, the purpose is unclear to the user.

  • People felt the design was outdated, disliked the colour scheme and images were of low and inconsistent quality - the website needed an updated look.

  • Some parts of the website are overloaded with information, and there are too many links that lead to more links - it feels tedious and annoying to find what you need quickly.
